Change of Battle Plan going into Round 5 and beyond!

Good morning and happy Thursday to friends and family. Thank you gain for your love, hope, and prayers. Your overwhelming support continues to lift me UP! I’ve been praying for small blessing these last few weeks and many of my prayers have been answered. I hope the following discussion isn’t too much detail, but if anyone can benefit from my experience, or if it motivates you or a love one to get a colonoscopy, then I’ve made a difference!

As I mentioned in my previous update, Round 4 was brutal and that the side effects are cumulative, so I’ve been anticipating a dreadful Round 5. The two biggest issues among the list of many side effects have been extreme Nausea and the Fatigue that comes from not getting enough nutrition. Even when I do eat or drink protein smoothies, the nutrients pass right through me in a matter of minutes. This is due to the Ileostomy I have. It doesn’t allow my system to extract the nutrients I need.

I met with my Oncologist this week and convinced him to add TPN to my program. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a method of feeding that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract. Fluids are given into a vein to provide most of the nutrients the body needs. On one hand I’m very excited about the benefits this will bring but on the other hand it will likely limit my ability to go out and do things. Initially they said this may need to run 18-24 hrs a day. I’m hoping to get this down to 6-8 hrs but I don’t know if this is possible. Below is about 2/3 rd’s of what was delivered last night, the rest is in the fridge.

My in-home nurse and Angel Shanna will help me get started this afternoon. Wish me luck on this new journey. I’m certain it will make a huge difference in my successful battle. I’ll leave you with this quote today as inspiration to battle on and continue to encourage and support those in need.

  4. Kevin you continue to be in my prayers. One of my favorite songs today is “Rise Up” by Andra Day. I often think of you and others when I am praying for healing for those I know are in need of it. So my prayer for you is that you continue to RISE UP. Take care…Liz

  5. I am confident that you will ensure all of your TPN infusions are mixed accurately, labeled appropriately, and quality checked by a registered clinician. (You just can’t stay away from work, can you?). Kidding aside, all of your experiences with CareFusion have made you an educated patient which can only work to your advantage. I know you will triumph. I’ve never known you not to win when you get into a tough fight. Do what you can from your side and the good Lord will take care of the rest.

  6. Kevin,
TPN will be great to help provide nutrition! We used to call it “steak and potatoes” when we gave TPN and lipids to our patients. It may take a little longer for the initial infusions but the energy and strength will be worth it! Keeping you and your family always in my prayers!
